Grace under pressure, and James Bond attitude sum up the 2000 Aston Martin's DB7 Volante.

When I was thinking of how to describe DB7, what immediately came to mind, was that this is an elegant GT, that is not afraid to go fast.  I would call it Grace under pressure, or maybe grace with pace.  I expected this car to be beautiful to look at but not special to drive.  The surprise was that the DB7 is rewarding in every way, from its effortless V12 power, to the secure planted and involving feeling you get from chassis.  I would call it more BMW/Ferrari feeling then Mercedes.  When driving the Aston, it does not seem to matter the pace, it just feels planted and connected to the road, yet never jostles your passenger.  Put the top down and you can give your passenger a thrill ride that never seems harried.  The Aston can be driven really fast and yet the car never breaks a sweat doing it.  Bottom line is that a lot of effort went into setting up and tuning this cars suspension.

The
essence of this incredible machine is the DB7's  uncanny ability to flatter your driving skill, always making you look like a better driver in every way, all the while delivering an involving driving experience.   Now throw in the James Bond cache and you have a unique and thrilling ownership experience.

What others have said about this car... "In 2000, Aston Martin revamped the DB7. They replaced the 6-cylinder engine with a new advanced all-aluminum, 420 hp, 6.0 liter, V12 engine developed by Cosworth engineering. The frame was modified to handle the additional power. Some small styling cues were also added. And, the moniker "Vantage" was added to the name. [The "Vantage" appellation has been used historically by Aston Martin to indicate a performance enhanced version of a base model car.]

As visually beautiful as this car is, half of its beauty is in its performance. The relentless torque produced by the V12 engine pulls this car forward in a rush of excitement. The car will literally throw you back into your seat when you floor it.

Handling is excellent. I drive aggressively (beyond the limit of average cars, but not at the limit of sports cars). The car loves twisty roads. Road feel is perfect for a performance car, always glued, never flighty.

Comparing the handling of the DB7V to a Jaguar XKR makes for good contrast. The Jag feels a little light up to about 60 mph. It then seems more glued. It starts to feel lighter again in around 130 mph. The DB7V is different. It starts out feeling glued to the road and stays there -- at least to the limit I have driven (around 140). The car is as dead steady at 140+ mph as it is at 70 mph.

[A note on comparing the DB7V to the Jaguar XKR. Most car mags have done this comparison. They all come to the conclusion that the XKR, at about half the price, is a better value. The XKR surely is a great car. I use one as my daily driver. But, comparing value is a fools game. These cars are not about value or need. They are about desire.]

Part of the fun of buying an Aston Martin is specifying the car. Each car is handbuilt and can be customized to the exact requirements of the buyer. In addition to a wide number of options, AM will accommodate just about any request at their Works Service Department.

The service AM provides is outstanding. This extends from the dealership through the management of Aston Martin Lagonda. The early versions of the DB7V, which includes my car, had an error in an Engine Control Unit (ECU) which caused the "Check Engine" light to come on. I mentioned on an Aston Martin e-mail list that this had occurred in my car. The next day, the head of Aston Martin US, Simon Rodd, called me to say he had heard I had a problem with my car, he was having a replacement ECU overnighted to my dealer, and he had contacted my dealer to set up an appointment. The dealer called within minutes to schedule the appointment. Such service and concern is unprecedented in my experience.

Both the car and the service have been so outstanding I can recommend this car without the slightest reservation.
